Why Decodable Sentences Matter in Early French Reading
Many French primary classrooms rely heavily on sight words and leveled texts, but these approaches don’t work for every learner, especially those who need a structured, sound-based approach to reading.
That’s where French decodable sentences come in. They give students the chance to:
- Decode actual words (instead of guessing or memorizing)
- Practice directionality, spaces, and one-to-one correspondence
- Reinforce high frequency words and grammar concepts like masculin/féminin
- Read and write using meaningful, complete sentences
Rather than isolated drills, this approach connects decoding to real reading—and that’s where the magic happens.
How to Teach French Sounds with Confidence
The Phrases fantastiques – Vowels & Complex Sounds bundle is designed to grow with your students as they master a wide range of French sounds.
- Start with vowel sounds like a, e, i, o, u, é to build a strong decoding foundation.
- Gradually move on to complex sounds like on, ch, ou, ai/ei, an/en, and more.
- Use colour-coded cards with the target sound highlighted in red to help students visually isolate the sound in each word.
You can scaffold their learning even further by offering two options:
- Vocabulary-building version: Word and picture on the same card
- Decoding version: Word and picture on separate cards (you can have students match the two). This is the version I use.
With this approach, you can meet students exactly where they are, whether they’re just beginning to sound out words or are ready to decode independently.
4 Easy Ways to Implement This French Decodable Sentences Bundle in Your Classroom
Whether you're new to decodable sentences or just need a fresh routine, here are a few of my favourite ways to use this resource:
- In a Pocket Chart:
Print and laminate 1–2 model sentences. Display them in your pocket chart along with the corresponding vocabulary and high frequency words. Students can build, rebuild, and read aloud as they practice decoding and grammar. - Using the Mini Books:
Each sound in the bundle includes four mini books - two with illustrations, and then a second version of each without illustrations, for student-created drawings. Use them for guided reading, small groups, centres, or take-home practice. - As an Independent Centre with “I Can” Cards:
Once students are familiar with the routine, give them the provided “Je peux…” card to make it an independent activity. It's honestly amazing the sentences my students can build, read, and write on their own after just a little bit of practice! - Sentence Writing Practice:
Students choose a sentence to write on the included recording sheet (horizontal or vertical), then illustrate it—reinforcing directionality, punctuation, and comprehension.
